Job Advert: Tennis Scotland Non Executive Director

Tennis Scotland is currently looking to strengthen its Board and is recruiting for Non Executive Directors.

There is real momentum within Scottish tennis with significant progress being made across a number of areas in recent years. Community club membership has never been so high with record levels of members enjoying tennis across Scotland and another record year forecast for 2022. Tennis Scotland has also launched a new GB National Tennis Academy as part of the ambitions for performance success via a well-resourced programme based in Scotland. Also via the securing of funds to develop more indoor tennis venues, the first phase of new indoor projects will soon start to be built in 2022 to increase the capacity for year-round tennis in Scotland.

This is a voluntary role, with a time commitment of up to four Board meetings per year, as well as involvement in occasional Strategy sessions, Board Sub Committees and/or Working Groups as appropriate.

The Board of Tennis Scotland has a critical role to play to support the organisation in the fulfilment of its Vision of “tennis opened up to deliver the legacy” and its Mission “to grow tennis by making it relevant, accessible, welcoming and enjoyable”.

In pursuit of its Vision and Mission, the Board has adopted specific strategic objectives as follows:

  • To build stronger venues at the heart of our community making tennis accessible
  • To build a world class player development pathway
  • To develop a range of facilities and venues fit for the future of our sport making tennis relevant
  • To deliver a range of events and competitions to experience and showcase tennis making tennis enjoyable and welcoming
  • To grow and develop a world class workforce
  • To grow and develop resources to enable an effective organisation

The above strategic objectives, together with sound partnership working with the LTA and sportscotland, have helped to deliver significant resources both in capital and revenue so that strategic implementation plans can be actioned and delivered.

As a Non Executive Director, you will be expected to play a central role in guiding the strategic direction of Tennis Scotland and monitoring the delivery performance of the Executive Team. You will be offered the training you need to make a strong contribution. 

In terms of the appointment, which is for a three-year term, the key elements of this role are:

  • Providing an independent and trusted view to the Board
  • Ongoing input and challenge into Tennis Scotland’s strategy, including the monitoring of its delivery
  • Providing advice and support to the Executive Team in specific areas of expertise
  • Participating, where appropriate, in Working Groups as an advisor

Tennis Scotland is interested in potential applicants with a broad range of sporting, business and/or professional experience in leadership positions, with desirable requirements being:

  • A positive track record of leadership
  • A keen interest in sport, ideally tennis, with experience of governance in sporting organisations being desirable
  • Strong leadership qualities, including effective communication skills
  • The ability to develop and maintain trusted relationships with the key partners of Tennis Scotland
  • Experience of creating an effective performance management culture for the delivery of strategy

In addition, the person will have sufficient time flexibility to properly execute the requirements of the role.
